Russell Lee
Photographs from the Farm Security Administration (FSA) work in the 1930s and the American Mining Communities project commissioned by the Dept of Interior in the 1940s.
The FSA photography programme, promoting The New Deal in the USA, also saw work by Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans and others. It was one of the models Amber / Side Gallery explored as it looked at approaches to documenting communities in NE England. The mining communities Lee documented were in West Virginia and Kentucky. Russell Lee visited Side Gallery in the 1980s.
