River Project
Photographs of industrial locations on the River Tyne that became part of the group’s River Project of 1974.
The River Project was Amber’s first major group project, widening out from filmmaking. It involved photography (Graham Smith and Laurie Wheatley, as well as Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen), writing (Tom Pickard and Rodney Pybus), visual arts (Peter Engel) and Amber Films (Launch and High Row). The touring project was shown in various communities om both sides of the industrial Tyne. The inability to find a venue in Newcastle that would show documentary photography was one of key reasons that the group opened Side Gallery in the Quayside premises it bought in 1975.
