In 2015, Amber showed its film Wallsend 72 at The Anson, a pub in Wallsend’s town centre. We were looking for former juvenile jazz band players who would help with our project at Carville Primary School – in particular members of the Rising Sun Legionnaires, who had featured in the original film. In the autumn of 2016 and early 2017, Amber delivered a film project with 13 former Legionnaires who were trained to interview each other on camera and then work with us to develop their own account of a childhood filled with kazoos, drums, maces and medals – a culture that seemed to populate every piece of spare land in the North East of England in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
